Scope levels
Cosmetic refresh: paint, mirror, vanity swap with existing plumbing, lighting fixtures, and accessories. Often a few days.
Mid-scope remodel: tub-to-shower conversion, new tile surround, new vanity and toilet, updated lighting and exhaust. Typically 1–3 weeks.
Full remodel: layout changes, moved plumbing, new flooring, custom shower with niche and bench, double vanity. Often 4–8+ weeks depending on permits and material lead times.
Waterproofing and ventilation
Showers and wet areas need a continuous waterproofing membrane behind tile, properly sloped pans, and sealed penetrations. Cutting corners here is the most common cause of premature failure.
An adequately sized, vented-to-outside exhaust fan protects finishes and indoor air quality and is required by code in most jurisdictions.
Accessibility and aging-in-place
Curbless showers, blocking in walls for future grab bars, comfort-height toilets, and wider doorways are easier and far less expensive to plan during a remodel than to add later.
